National Wildlife Federation Action Fund Endorses Tom Carper for U.S. Senate

August 31, 2018 – The National Wildlife Federation Action Fund today announced its enthusiastic endorsement of Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware for re-election, citing Sen. Carper’s effectiveness at protecting Delaware’s wildlife, clean water, and public health.

“Senator Carper is an environmental warrior who works tirelessly every day to protect Delaware’s unrivalled natural resources, from the waterways of the Christina and Nanticoke to the red knots and horseshoe crabs of the Delaware Bayshore. At a time of unprecedented threats to Delaware’s environment—drilling off of our beaches, rolling back of public health protections, and escalating climate impacts—Senator Carper consistently stands up for our public health and speaks out for wildlife. He’s fought against egregious proposals to allow more pollution from power plants, vehicles, and energy extraction—including leading the charge that forced Scott Pruitt to resign—and he’s made bipartisan progress where possible, such as water infrastructure and chemical safety reform. As someone who works closely with Senator Carper every day in both Delaware and Washington, I can attest that we need his strong leadership now more than ever. The National Wildlife Federation Action Fund enthusiastically endorses his re-election,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund.

Among the highlights of Sen. Carper’s conservation work:

  • Championing clean water through the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act and defense of the Clean Water Act
  • Bringing millions of Americans cleaner air by reducing cross-state air pollution and accelerating the adoption of clean energy and electric vehicles
  • Leading efforts to act on climate throughout his service on the Environment and Public Works Committee
  • Making communities more resilient to extreme weather through investments in natural defenses
  • Spearheading efforts to save America’s at-risk wildlife and defend the Endangered Species Act

The Action Fund’s sister organization, the National Wildlife Federation, recognized Sen. Carper this year with 2018 Conservation Achievement Award.

“The Golden Rule calls us to treat others the way we would want to be treated. To me, that means that we have an obligation to care for our neighbors, including all the living things that share this planet with us,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper. “Species like the bald eagle, the horseshoe crab and the red knot have come to represent our country and our state and highlight our unique landscape. We must do everything we can to protect these creatures and the places they live so that future generations can enjoy and marvel at them as we have. While this administration continues to attack the successful and popular laws protecting them, I will continue to fight back. We need more resources to help recover and safeguard these species, and their habitats, for years to come – not more blatant, political attacks on the creatures who also call this planet home.”
