Carper Endorses Joe Biden for President of the United States

WILMINGTON, DE – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden for President of the United States.

“In 1982, it was then-Senator Joe Biden who first encouraged me to run for Delaware’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Eighteen years later, he was the first to encourage me to run for the U.S. Senate. For months, I have encouraged him to seek the highest office in our land and, today, I could not be more proud to endorse my friend Joe as he launches his campaign to be the next President of the United States.

“Throughout his time in public service, Joe has proven that you can disagree without being disagreeable, and that you can compromise on policy without compromising your principles. He is a man of his word and of integrity, and it is that character that has earned him the respect of voters and world leaders alike.

“Joe has spent his career championing policies that help all Americans. He is a tested, experienced leader with a proven track record of getting things done for our country. Alongside President Barack Obama, Joe helped lead our nation out of the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. What followed was the longest streak of private sector job growth on record. He helped expand access to quality, affordable health care for millions of Americans under the Affordable Care Act. He wasn’t afraid to stay out of step and lead the way to ensure equality for our LGTBQ friends and family. For years, Joe has understood that we have a moral obligation to address the threat of climate change and leave a safer, healthier planet for future generations, along with a stronger economy. Throughout his career, Joe has been a steadfast champion for our veterans because he understands that those who risk their lives to protect our nation deserve our gratitude and full support.

“Joe is also uniquely positioned to help restore America’s standing in the world. He understands the world. He’s traveled the world. He knows world leaders personally, and they know and respect him. From the moment he takes office, Joe will be ready to lead.

“Joe is not afraid of a fight and has shown that he has what it will take to win. We need somebody who won’t just unite our party, but somebody who can unite our country. Joe has earned the respect of Democrats, Independents, and even many Republicans. In an increasingly polarized country, it’s Joe’s authenticity that continues to be well-received in red and blue states alike.

“Even through unimaginable tragedy and triumph, Joe has always had the heart of a servant and an unwavering belief that our country’s best days are still ahead. I cannot think of anyone better suited to lead our nation at this critical time than Joe Biden. He knows that our differences hardly compare to the values that we all hold dear as Americans. He knows that our country is strongest when we work to expand opportunities for everyone — regardless of race, creed, gender or background. And he believes in uniting our nation and creating a brighter future together.

“Joe has been a terrific vice president, an exceptional representative for the people of Delaware, a thoughtful colleague and an even better friend. Even more importantly, though, he is a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather and a dedicated son and brother. It is those qualities that have made him an exceptional human being, and it is those qualities that will enable him to serve with distinction as our next president.”
