Carper delivers strong message to Delawareans at Democratic Primary Debate

WILMINGTON, Del.— Standing side-by-side with his primary opponent in an auditorium packed with hundreds of Delaware voters, U.S. Senator Tom Carper stood out as the principled and experienced leader who will fight and win for Delaware’s priorities in an increasingly divided Washington.

Tom stood strong as the clear choice for Delawareans by focusing on his accomplishments for Delaware and his forward-looking vision, and by delivering a strong message directly to Delaware’s workers, families, students and seniors: he’ll stop at nothing to fight for them.

“I love serving the people of this state,” Tom said. “I’m running for reelection to give affordable health care to all Americans by fixing the ACA. I’m running for re-election to ensure the longest running economic expansion in U.S. history is not short circuited by a President who has really stupid ideas on trade and on the economy. I’m running for reelection so that children trying to escape unbelievable horrors in Central America don’t end up in a cage or lost somewhere in this country. I’m running for reelection to make sure our planet has a future because we did something about climate change. Because we chose windmills over oil wells. Because we cleaned our air and water and created millions of jobs at the same time. That’s why I’m running for reelection.”

In these increasingly turbulent times, Delawareans can trust that Tom will wield his experience, relationships and influence to stop Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda and fight for good-paying jobs, high quality health care and clean air and water for every Delawarean. He’s proven that over the past two years by:

  • Protecting Delaware jobs by supporting the Port of Wilmington, Dover Air Force Base, Delaware’s beaches and major transportation projects up and down the state.
  • Championing universal health care by writing key provisions of the Affordable Care Act, and by working 24/7 to stop a dangerous repeal of the ACA, reaching across the aisle and teaming up with governors across the country to influence their respective senators.
  •  Stopping two of Trump’s most egregious environmental nominees and effectively fighting former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt as the Democrats’ leader on the Senate Environment and Publics Works Committee.

Once again, Delawareans saw tonight why they have consistently elected Tom to fight for them in Washington: he will always stand with Delaware’s workers, families, students and seniors.

Today, Tom received the endorsement from VoteVets. Last week, Tom received the endorsement from Giffords, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly. Tom has also received endorsements in the 2018 race for U.S. Senate from the Delaware Democratic Party, Delaware AFL-CIO, Delaware Laborers, Delaware State Education Association (DSEA), Delaware Stonewall PAC, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Action Fund and League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund.

The Delaware Democratic Primary Election is on Thursday, September 6.
